This website is just one of the many ways in which The Kevin Kitchnefsky
Foundation for Spinal Cord Research is actively working to raise
awareness and funding for research toward a cure for paralysis. We hope
that you find it helpful. A childhood day spent playing basketball. A high school day filled with classes, homework and friends. A regular old work day. In 1996, while on the job for a construction company in New Jersey, Kevin was unloading two stacks of chain-link fence from a tractor-trailer. After one of the crew removed the top portion, he climbed to the top of the remaining stack to remove the wooden pallets that separated the stacks. Just after he jumped off the truck, the remaining 27 units of chain-link fence, each weighing about 100 pounds, slid off the truck and pinned him against the tractor-trailer, breaking half a dozen vertebrae and damaging his spinal cord. The damage resulted in paralysis from the chest down. Today, Kevin and his young son Chad live with Kevin's parents in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania. Individuals who have suffered from Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) require an enormous amount of care. To see what Kevin's daily care routine is like, visit Spinal Cord Injury. Kevin says, "Doctors, who are among the leading spinal cord specialists in the world, have told me that at the current level of medical technology, I have only a 1% chance of ever walking again. I am determined to improve those odds!" And improving those odds is exactly what Kevin's Foundation is all about! |
