Looking around for help
After the initial crisis stage of
his injury had subsided, Kevin came home from the hospital and was able
to begin thinking about the future. He contacted the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation to see how he
could help.
Finding a direction
With family and friends at his side, Kevin set out to raise funds for
research dedicated to finding a cure for paralysis brought on by spinal
cord injury. After much effort, culminating in the very first Golf
Tournament in 1999, the Foundation raised a total of $7,500.00.
Connecting with great
allies
"At the Golf Tournament, I met Senator Ray Musto," recalls
Kevin. "He loved the event and became a firm supporter in our
cause. He suggested that I form my own organization to raise funds for
research and to help local people
with spinal cord injuries get medical
assistance, transportation and equipment. So, with patient assistance
from Senator Musto and Representative Sandra Major, we tackled the legal
process of creating a new foundation.
Getting
the Foundation "on its feet"
The Kevin Kitchnefsky
Foundation for Spinal Cord Research was incorporated in January of 2000.
To date, we are proud to have raised over $100,000. Since incorporating the
Foundation, we have continued to refine and expand the structure and
activities of the organization.
Making plans for the
future
Our goals are simple:
Raise
Funds – Our primary
focus? Raise much-needed funds to support the scientists who are doing
the research that will, in time, lead to a cure.
Increase Our Volunteer Base
and Build a Support Network
– There is so much to be done, and the more friends we have
pitching in, the more we can do. With every
new outreach, we add more and more allies to our team. We'd love to
count you among them!
Increase
Public Awareness
- We need to spread the word to increase the effectiveness of our
fundraisers and to inform people about the seriousness of the plight of
people who suffer from paralysis. There is a cure out there, but the
researchers need resources to find it. So please, tell your friends,
family and co-workers about us and our events.
In
Memory Of...
We were all greatly saddened by
the recent loss of our longtime friend and Board Member Susan Gorgol. A
consummate professional and enthusiastic supporter of both Kevin and the
Foundation, Susan was always front and center - ready to pitch in! She
was a warm, caring person and we miss her so very much. |
